How Does Renuvion Work?

Renuvion, formerly known as J-Plasma®, uses a probe to deliver radiofrequency (RF) energy combined with helium beneath the skin’s surface, targeting the skin below the surface without causing damage to the outer layers of skin. The helium fills the tunnels created by the probe then the RF electrical current is released, creating what is known as a cold plasma cloud. The plasma cloud causes immediate skin contraction and triggers the body’s natural healing process to begin, which generates new collagen to result in tighter, smoother skin over the course of a few months.

To perform a treatment with Renuvion, your surgeon uses either a local anesthetic with sedation or a general anesthetic when combining Renuvion with liposuction. The Renuvion probe is inserted into the skin via small incisions. It is often used in combination with liposuction, allowing your surgeon to use the same incisions for liposuction and Renuvion to remove fat and tighten skin, giving you a smoother, more toned appearance.

What Can Renuvion Treat?

Your surgeon uses Renuvion to lift and tighten loose, sagging skin on the face and body. During one treatment session, multiple areas can be treated, including:

  • Neck and jawline
  • Arms
  • Back
  • Bra fat
  • Waistline
  • Stomach
  • Love handles
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Flanks

Renuvion is best for patients who have mild to moderate loosening and sagging of skin and are not ready for a surgical procedure. For patients with more severe skin laxity, your surgeon may recommend a facelift and neck lift, tummy tuck, arm lift or thigh lift. During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your skin and recommend the best treatment for your needs.

Combining Renuvion with Liposuction

During a liposuction treatment, excess fat is removed from the body using a cannula inserted through small incisions in the skin. Depending on the condition of your skin, removing the fat may result in loose, stretched out skin that does not bounce back tightly after surgery. Renuvion can be combined with liposuction to help tighten the skin so that it fits the new contours created with liposuction.

The Renuvion probe can be inserted into the incisions used during liposuction, and the energy causes the tissue to contract and tighten, giving an immediate improvement in skin laxity, with greater results appearing over time. This combination of treatments results in an even better result.

How Soon Will I See Results?

Renuvion causes an immediate contraction of skin tissue, resulting in some preliminary skin tightening. It takes 6 to 9 months for your skin to fully heal and generate new collagen, which results in long-lasting smoother, tighter skin.

How Long Is Recovery from Renuvion?

After a Renuvion treatment, most patients return to their normal activities within about a week. Expect light bruising and swelling for the first week. Discomfort, which can usually be managed with over-the-counter medication, typically lasts for a week or two. You may need to wear a compression wrap for 4 to 6 weeks to minimize swelling and optimize results.

Most patients are able to return to normal activities within 5 to 7 days after a Renuvion treatment. Since the treatment requires incisions in the skin, you may experience some bruising and swelling at the treatment area, but this should fade within 1 to 2 weeks. Pain and swelling can be managed with an over-the-counter pain reliever.

When you combine Renuvion with liposuction, your surgeon will require you to wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and provide support as you heal. He will prescribe pain medication to ensure your comfort during the healing process.
